Nepal Earthquake 2015

On Saturday afternoon April 25, 2015, a massive earthquake of 7.9 magnitude struck Nepal causing widespread destruction.  This earthquake now famously known as great earthquake, coupled with another in May claimed the lives of nearly 9000 and injured many more. Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless with entire villages flattened, across many districts of the country. At least 8 million-one third of the entire Nepali population have been affected due to this tragedy.

In response to the tragic earthquake, Lumbini World Peace Forum (LWPF) volunteers were immediately deployed in worst affected districts including Sindhupalchowk, Kavre, Nuwakot, Dhading and various parts inside Kathmandu valley. Some of our volunteers in Kathmandu were engaged in raising funds and collecting relief materials for earthquake victims by creating crowdfunding sites while others were utilizing social networks like Facebook to reach out the potential donors during the emergency. Relief materials of immediate need were distributed among as many as 3,600 households affected due to earthquake by the end of June. For a month our volunteers worked tirelessly carrying tarpaulins, blankets, mosquito nets, food items to name a few and some volunteers still continue to do so.  Our volunteers focused on women and children as they were most vulnerable and the marginalized communities in rural areas heavily affected by the earthquake.

In addition to our relief centered activities in the wake of shocking earthquake LWPF is raising funds to at least rebuild one disaster-proof village and thirteen disaster-proof schools in 13 worst affected districts.

Rebuilding Resilient Nepal Together

Besides immediate relief and rehabilitation of the victims directly affected by the earthquake there has been very little significant debate and discourses on long term safety measures in building and rebuilding practices of homes as well as infrastructures in Nepal. It is a matter of urgency to start debate and discussions with relevant experts on rebuilding Nepal that is that is sustainable, resilient and disaster proof after the horrific tragedy of April 2015 and months that followed.
Considering the fact above, LWPF has launched the series of interaction program on the topic of Post-Disaster Rebuilding and Impact on Nepalese Economy after Earthquake. The objective of the interaction program is to share experiences and lessons learned as well as inform general public about future plans of entire stakeholders engaged in reconstruction and recovery planning efforts nationwide. The monthly interaction series will be continued until April 2016.
